Hello everyone. Got my Fallout 4 GOTY this month and finished the main story and Automatron on Normal difficulty. I’m also about to finish Far Harbor and after finishing it I want to give survival mode a try. Those who have played on that difficulty, do you recommend it? Is it actually enjoyable or more of a tedious difficulty?
Best Tips in Survival Mode
I just got Fallout 4 GOTY as well this past weekend for PS4. After having to reroll twice in Survival, I found a few tips that will greatly benefit you early on.
- When you get to Sanctuary after leaving the Vault, go through each house thoroughly and salvage as many trees and cars (for steel and wood) as you can.
- Make sure you have at least 5 points into Luck stat so that you can immediately get Idiot Savant perk when you hit level 2. This is going to be HUGE early on in Survival. I had to reroll twice because I couldn’t get past Concord:( (died like 10 times the 1st time, and another 10 the 2nd time), 3rd time though when I cleared Sanctuary and salvaged all unnecessary objects, it was a completely different ballgame.
- Once you have amassed a bunch of Steel, it is time to start crafting some furniture and put that Idiot Savant perk to optimal use! The cheapest method I found (but also the most time-consuming) was crafting the Red Toolboxes (costs 2 Steel) repeatedly under ‘Furniture’ –> ‘Containers’. Up to 3 of them can stack on top of each other, so if you point your cursor all the way down to the ground directly in front of you, you’ll be able to repeatedly craft them, then salvage them by taking a step forward without having to move the mouse. Rinse and repeat. I left Sanctuary at level 7 before even heading over to Concord and still had a bunch of Steel and Wood left!
- Save. Save. Save. Since Manual saving and most auto-saving aren’t allowed, the only way to save is by sleeping in a bed. Know where beds are in the Commonwealth, and remember them.
- Collect all items you find, even if its a Coffee Cup. They come in handy for your settlements and finishing off that level when you’re almost leveled up but need a bit more exp to finish the job. Crafting/Settlements is going to be your best friend.
- always save your empty bottles, beer bottles, etc. You can fill them at wells in your settlement for an almost-unlimited supply of Purified Water.
- Cooking. Save all your meat that you find from monsters, don’t sell them to vendors. You’ll want them craft over the cooking station in your settlement, the more you cook, the more exp you’ll get as well 🙂
- Don’t be afraid to turn tail and run. If you feel outnumbered, or can’t see where the enemy is and you’re under attack, run as fast as you can and try to get out of range. It’s better to run and stay alive, than to die and lose an hour of progress!
- Equip gear with +Charisma when bartering with NPC’s. You’re going to get more bang for your buck, both buying, and selling. You can even add the +CHR gear to your ‘Favorite’ so that you can quickly equip them before bartering without having to go to the Pip-Boy menu.
- I have a few more but I will add them later 🙂 These should help for now!! Good luck and stay safe.
