So, a lot of people have been talking and wondering about the Stardew Valley Fair’s grange event. How items are scored, how to maximize your score, etc. I too was wondering this, and I found that some of the information on the wiki was either wrong/misleading, and that some relevant information was missing (mostly the information about item categories).
Because of this, I decided to rummage through the game’s code until I found all of the answers and post it here. Anyways, without further ado here is everything I learned about the grange display event:
Your score for the grange display starts out with 14 points. These are base points that are basically just given to you for no reason.
Then each item in the display is scored by quality. No-star item = +1 point, silver-star item = +2, gold-star = +3.
Then each item gets 1 more point for each qualification they meet below:
This means gold star items worth more than 200 get a total of 6 points. Silver star items worth over 300 get 6 points. No-star items worth over 400 also get 6 points. This makes MANY items functionally IDENTICAL (either get a gold star item over 200, a silver star item over 300, or ANY item over 400).
After that, the game checks the following item categories and for each category you’ve met, you get 5 more points.
Animal Products
Minerals
Cooking
Fish
Foraging, Flowers, Tree Saps
Fruit
Vegetables
Artisan Goods / Products
This means, ultimately there are ONLY 8 categories. 8 categories means there is a ‘theoretical maximum’ of 40 additional points from categories (even though there is 9 display spaces), HOWEVER, the bonus from categories is CAPPED at 30 points. (Boo!) This means you really only need to fill 6 of the categories listed above, since anything more than that awards no extra points. (Bummer!) ANY item that isn’t listed above falls into no category and does not award 5 additional points.
Lastly, the game modifies your score depending on how many items you submitted, according to the formula: 9-2*(number of blank slots in display).
This gives the follow effective modifier for number of items submitted:
Items: Modifier
Therefore, it is always best to submit 9 items, even if the items are utter trash, since submitting less than 9 items will lessen your overall score.
After all is said and done, your score it totalled. 14 points base, 54 from having 9 items worth 6 points (gold items worth over 200, silver items worth over 300, or any items worth over 400), 30 from having at least 6 categories, and 9 from having 9 items. This means the maximum score possible is 107.
They either lied (people do tend to exaggerate when they are bragging), cheated (items with a quality higher than gold can be put into the game using the mod console; each quality step above gold would award +1 point.), or grange scoring used to be different and was changed at some point (unknown).
Anyways, that’s everything I discovered. If you have any questions or there’s something you don’t understand, feel free to comment below.
