Valkyria Chronicles 4 – Squad Stories & How They Work

A collection of the different Squad Stories, as well as a brief explanation on how to unlock them.

Prelude: An Author’s Note

Firstly I’d like to apologize for the lack of polish that’s going to inevitably come with this Guide. I don’t usually write these myself, but seeing as no one else has bothered yet, I thought I’d bite the bullet and start compiling info. This is, for the most part, now done. If anyone has anything to rectify or add in regards to the earliest a story is available, please feel free to share. If people ask for it, I’ll add times to A-rank or clean up the formatting somewhat.

How Do Squad Stories Appear?

Despite how it might initially seem, you do not need to use all the Squad members involved in a story in order to unlock it, and you do not need to have all the members in your active squad – but do need to be capable of accessing them, obviously. Squad Stories unlock as soon as one of the members reaches the rank of Corporal and you finish clearing a mission. The only time the latter is relevant is if you get the final recruit for a Squad Story and someone’s already a Corporal. If it isn’t proccing, just try finishing out a random chapter and see if that helps.

As Pavlissimus has helpfully suggested, spending 40 CP on a unit on the first skirmish map is a pretty quick and non-stressful way to go about it. An addition from Benderman24 states that normal missions are twice as effective, so spending 20 CP on one of the earlier maps is more efficient in pretty much every way if you can be bothered to complete the easy objectives.

Now for the part you’ve actually come for.

The following units all come in pre-promoted, but don’t let that fool you. You’ll still need to spend at least 20 CP in a main story chapter (or 40 CP in skirmishes) to unlock their Squad Stories.

Christel (Scout): Use the Cenotaph in the post-game.

André (Engineer), Brian (Scout), Louffe (Grenadier), Sergio (Lancer): Complete Through The Fire in post-game.

Line Break

This is mostly in part to have a break between the ‘hidden units’ section and the bottom so that you aren’t immediately starting at the comments when you actually want to still look at the guide.
